Daniel Patrick Trant, 40, a bond trader with the firm of Cantor Fitzgerald, died Sept. 11, as a result of the terrorist attack on Manhattan’s World Trade Center Towers.
Born and raised in Westfield, Mass., Trant was a standout varsity athlete at Westfield High School, setting scoring records in basketball and soccer. He starred in basketball at Suffield Academy, in Connecticut, before becoming a two-time
All-American at Clark University, in Worcester, Massachusetts, leading them to the NCAA Division III Basketball Final in 1983. In 1984, Trant was drafted by the World Champion Boston Celtics, and attended training camp with such NBA greats as Hall-of-Famer and legend Larry Bird. Trant went on to play professional basketball in his ancestral homeland of Ireland, on teams in Dublin and Belfast. He returned to Western Massachusetts as a member of the Springfield Fame in the inaugural season of the United States Basketball League, contributing to the first ever league championship.
In 1986, Trant departed professional basketball and joined the staff of the Hampden County (Mass.) District Attorney working in the Victim Witness Program. In 1991, Trant and his family relocated to Long Island as he began a career on Wall Street, working with several brokerage firms before moving to Cantor Fitzgerald in 1997.
Trant has been active in youth sports programs on Long Island, serving as an inspirational coach and mentor to hundreds of youth in the Stony Brook, Setauket and Northport areas. He was as head coach of the Long Island Lightning AAU basketball team.
Trant is survived by his wife Kathy (Schiaffino) originally of Longmeadow, Mass., and three children, Jessica (19), Daniel (12) and Alex (10); his parents William T. and Mary C. (Fay) Trant of Winter Haven, Florida, and seven brothers and sisters, Kevin of Kensington, MD; Patricia Madamas of Westfield, MA; Maureen Landry of Willington, CT; Sally of Ashburn, VA; Timothy of Manassas, V A; Matthew of Bethesda, MD and Sheila Inserra of Park Ridge, IL, as well as father-in-law Fred Schiaffino of East Hampton, NY; mother-in-law Eileen Deraleau of Longmeadow, MA; sisters-in-law Lori Schiaffino of East Hampton, NY and Marianne Barbieri of San Francisco; brothers-in-law Chris Schiaffino of East Hampton, NY and John Schiaffino of Longmeadow, MA. He was pre-deceased by his brother W. Michael Trant of Shartlesville, PA.
