Beverly Eckert: Friend, Colleague, Activist
All of us at VOICES and the entire 9/11 community were tremendously saddened by the loss of our friend Beverly Eckert, who died tragically on February 12, 2009 in a plane crash near Buffalo, New York.
After the death of her husband Sean Rooney on 9/11, Beverly joined forces with Mary Fetchet to provide 9/11 families with information and advocate on their behalf, thus launching VOICES’ far-reaching advocacy efforts. In addition to her work at VOICES, Beverly worked tirelessly with several 9/11 organizations to promote peace initiatives, a proper memorial at Ground Zero and building safety to mention a few. She was especially committed to improving the safety and security of all Americans. As a member of the 9/11 Family Steering Committee, she lobbied for the creation of the 9/11 Commission and legislation based on its recommendations. More recently, she became interested in the implementation of the WMD Commission recommendations. Beverly was among the 9/11 family members who met with President Obama in Washington, D.C. on Friday, February 6th to discuss the closing of the Guantanamo detention center.
At this difficult time, we offer our heartfelt condolences and prayers to her family and friends. As you know, Beverly was an important member of the 9/11 community who touched many lives. Her friendship and dedication to making a difference will be sorely missed. As we reflect on Beverly’s life and mourn her loss, we thank all those who have reached out to us for your words of encouragement.
Beverly’s family has created a beautiful tribute in her memory. You can visit the website at www.rememberingbeverly.com.
